5 page savage essay

Anthony hill

More money is spent on suburban school systems than inner city school systems. This turns into a cycle of disadvantage  childern.
kozol over the years gathered information from the 1988 to 1990 about American schools basically about east saint Louis ,Chicago ,and New York , and his plan as an educator was to compare and contrast urban schools which were mainly black, Latino, and Asian ,with suburban schools which are primarily white  .kozol was trying to compare the inequalities  between these different school systems .

Even though the differences between the two towns could be measured in minutes on a bridge or on a highway you can walk from one  community to the other and see that there a lot of differences between the two groups .In east saint Louis it was so bad that the  sewer system backed into the streets on a regular basis .the schools had no equipment  no books .one of the schools in New York was an old roller skating rink that had class rooms with no windows with children over crammed into a room . The book talks about the teacher how the teacher are under trained for the job and are shipped into the schools of the urban community because they don't care if the urban students get a education .

He talked about the school that had gyms for exercise that you couldn't use  because  they were crammed full of class room that were crammed  sometimes five and six classes going on all at once ,some of classes that had up to thirty five kids per class. One class he talked about had forty five students in it on opening day and the principal said don't worry about it by Christmas  half of them will  be gone . So the school systems were already factoring in that half their students would drop out.So that the teacher will then have a class size small enough to handle. They weren't  too concerned about keeping the kids in the class because they knew that they couldn't .
They knew they would disappear .the fact that they had one truancy officer who was responsible for keeping four hundred kids of the street during school hours kinda makes u think that the school system really didn't care about these kids ditching .he talked about the urban schools receiving half the money that suburban schools did .its crazy because the bulk of the money that goes to pay for school in the United States comes from property taxes , which means that poor community's have less money to put into their schools than wealthy community's do , but even though that's the fact poor community's often tax themselves at a higher rate so that more money will go into their schools yet they still have less than the rich community's ,because even at a higher tax rate the poor community cannot generate the funds being that the property taxes are so much lower in the poor community's.
Rich community's  not only have lots of money but also a lower tax rate meaning that they have more dough in their pockets that they can then use as a discretionary amount if they want to donate money to their school in which the often do, basically something people living in a poor community cannot do .
. I think that since then this whole property tax thing has been used a tool used by those in power to make sure that they stay in power kinda like what we been talking about in class the rich protecting their own which is true and still stands today .now days they go by zip code if you stay in east oakland you can't go to a piedmont school unless u live in that neighborhood even though
The school is in the same city you won't be allowed in kinda makes u think what the real reason why they do that looks like the segregation  between the white and the black community's of oakland
The poor live on the the fats and the rich come down from the hills and ride past looking at us as if  we have no chance in life. The way it's set up is making sure that the poor community's have no funding schools with holes in the wall and in the roof school that have no playgrounds art programs or music classes is all done by design so that the poor and uneducated stay poor and uneducated .they wanna keep you at a slaves level w so that you will never amount to anything but a worker to help build the next mans dream , while the rich and wealthy community s remain rich and wealthy with easy dreams to be lived because they were born with the silver spoon good education is paid for.
Let's not make it a black and white thing because  even in a couple years white people will be apart of the minority and the method of funding schools  is always going to insure that they will be in charge because their school systems are always going to be wealthy and taken care of providing their children with the best in education they are going to be the governors of our society .were As the children that will grow up in the poor community will be the governed .this may not last forever but I believe it will leak out a few more generations of the rich and educated class being in charge .
And yes  I do have a couple of possible solution that may fix this ,and that is ,start all buy taking all the money collected from all the states of the union an put it into a big bucket  and then you divide it equally  again equally  and evenly buy the number of students that are enrolled that year for each and every school so that every single student will get exactly the same amount of money ,what is am trying to describe is the redistribution of wealth , I mean life is unfair enough we can at least make sure that all of our children get the chance to start out on a level playing field instead of being cheated out off a good education .
I would make it mandatory that every child attend  a head start program before entering kindergarten with free optional after school programs available for any student who wants to be involved and make sure that they have a fully funded curriculum ,were talkin art ,music ,poetry ,science labs that actually have equipment, textbooks for each and every students so they don't have to share ,maybe even some advanced placement courses for any student that qualify ,I would make sure that all teacher are trained properly for the grade that they are teaching which will replace the fucked up teacher who  doesn't care whether we Learn or not  .

Every single student needs to be given the same equal opportunity under law so that everyone has the chance threw merit and hard work to have a chance at being successful in life and not doomed from birth and lucked down on as a people city or section who is behind ,can't even fill out an online job  application because they were never taught to use a computer .its sad to some time see kids in the library  typing with one finger to me that shows a sign that they really have not had any experience typing but If that kid lived in a half decent neighborhood with a good school set up ,typing would be pushed  on kids as early as 6 years old for every child that is capable but again available for each and every school.
Every single student need to be treated equal, but i  also think that if we ever do plan to change the school system we also need to take a look at changing the community surrounding the school . School makes a safe heaven for kids in the ghetto but soon as school is out they go  back to the obvious reality that they are in a fucked up situation that they need to get out off ,either it can be motivation to get out the ghetto  or make them give up easier  and become a statistic drop out because the people surrounding him in his community not  right ,there no positive influences people to look up to . most of my friends parents growing up did not have jobs  most of them were on welfare and section 8 half of them  touched the crack game once apon a time in there life also  almost all never had fathers living in the home  all this stuff plays a role i think its bigger than just worrying about changing the school system.
Changing the school system runs hand and hand with changing the community around it .if you think about it the only way that a person can make it out of the ghetto is if he or she is given the all the  tools to succeed along with positive role models around to constantly remind u that it is possible to become someone other than what they want you to be ,they want  us to stay in our section keep us from going to the good rich schools by using zip code enrollment which is in a way of  segregating the rich from the poor piedmont to oakland is a good example to think about while I describe to become successful you need a positive learning environment and positive community surrounding  the school  .but in the mean time the rich will always try to keep power over the poor by keeping us uneducated and unaware of shyt that goes on around us leaving  us without a voice or say so because we are so uneducated and unaware of what's going on we will always be an unequal nation until we come together with equal education opportunities  and funds for every kid to have a starting even chance  at life.

5 page essay final draft

Anthony hill
This will be a persuasive essay based on the book savage inequalities  describing  the differences and the connections of points that the book made that still occurs today .
I will cover poorly covered school systems ,bad teachers , and  how things are set up to protect the wealthy.first I will give a brief description of the book then I will talk about a couple points in the book that stood out to me that I feel still goes on today in urban city schools. Savage inequalities is hands down the most depressing book I read compared to to the book a child called it in a long time .
The author kozol over the years gathered information from the 1988 to 1990 about American schools basically about east saint Louis ,Chicago ,and New York , and his plan as an educator was to compare and contrast urban schools which were mainly black, Latino, and Asian ,with suburban schools which are primarily white  .kozol was trying to compare the inequalities  between these different school systems .
