5 page essay ruff draft

This will be a persuasive essay based on the book savage enequalities  describing  the differences and the connections of points that the book made that still occurs today .
I will cover poorly covered school systems ,bad teachers , and  how things are set up to protect the wealthy.first I will give a brief description of the book then I will talk about a couple points in the book that stood out to me that I feel still goes on today in urban city schools. Savage inequalitys is hands down the most depressing book I read compared to to the book a child called it in a long time .
The author kozol over the years gathered information from the 1988 to 1990 about American schools basically about east saint Louis ,Chicago ,and New York , and his plan as a educator was to compare and contrast urban schools which were mainly black, Latino, and Asian ,with suburban schools which are primarily white  .kozol was trying to compare the enequalities  between theses different school systems .

Even thought the differences between the two towns could be measured in minutes on a bridge or on a high way you can walk from one  community to the other and see that there a lot of differences between the two groups .in east saint Louis it was so bad that the  sewer system backed into the streets on a regular basis .the schools had no equipment  no books .one of the schools in New York was a old roller skating rink that had class rooms with no windows with children over crammed into a room . The book talks about the teacher how the teacher are under trained for the job and are shipped into the schools of the urban community beacause they don't care if the urban students get a education . He talked about the school that had gyms for excercise that you couldn't use  because  they were crammed full of class room that were crammed  some times five and six classes going on all at once ,of classes that had up to thirty five kids per class. One class he talked about had forty five students in it on opening day and the principal said don't worry about it by Christmas  half of them will  be gone . So the school systems were already factoring in that half their students would drop out.
So that the teacher will then have a class size small enough to handle.
They weren't to concerned about keeping the kids in the class because they knew that they couldn't .
They new they would disappear .the fact that they had one truency officer who was responsible for keeping four hundred kids of the street during school hours kind makes u think that the school system really didn't care about these kids ditching either .he talked about the urban schools receiving half the money that suburban schools did .its crazy because the bulk of the money that goes to pay for school in the United States comes from property taxes , which means that poor community's have less money to put into their schools than wealthy community's do , but even though that's the fact poor community's often tax themselves at a higher rate so that more money will go into their schools yet they still have less that the rich community's ,because even at a higher tax rate the poor community cannot generate the funds being that the property taxes are so much lower in the poor community's.
Rich community's  not only have lots of money but also a lower tax rate meaning that they have more Coin in their pocket that they can then use as a discretionary amount if they want to donate money to their school in which the often do, basically something people living in a poor community cannot do
. I think that since then this whole property tax thing has been used a tool used buy those in power to make sure that they stay in power kinda like what we been talking about in class the rich protecting their own which is true and still stands today .now days they go by zip code if you stay in east oakland you can't go to a piedmont school unless u live in that neighborhood even though
The school is in the same city u won't be allowed in kinda makes u think what the real reason why they do that looks like the segregation  between the white and the black community's of oakland
The poor live on the the fats and the rich come down from the hills and ride past looking at us as if  we have no chance in life. The way it's set up is making sure that the poor community's have no funding schools with holes in the wall and in the roof school that have no playgrounds art programs or music classes is all done by design so that the poor and uneducated stay poor and uneducated .they wanna keep you at a slaves level w so that you will never amount to any thing but a worker to help build the next mans dream , while the rich and wealthy community s remain rich and wealthy with easy dreams to be lived because they were born with the silver spoon good education is paid for.
Let's not make it a black and white thing beacause  even in a couple years white people will be apart of the minority and the method of funding schools  is always going to insure that they will be in charge because their school systems are always going to be wealthy and token care of providing their children with the best in education their are going to be the governors of our society .were Asa the children that will grow up in the poor community will be the governed .this may not last forever but I believe it will leak out a few more generations of the rich and educated class being in charge .
And yes  I do have a couple of possible solution that may fix this ,and that is

Are school suffering like schools in east saint Louis ?

I think that the school in the Bay Area at least some in the more rugged areas are like the ones in East St. Louis reading the book they talked a lot about the condtions the schools were in with the molded walls And sewage running into the schools and how some students had to share books just painted a very ugly picture of a broken down school .We'll oakland schools are not quit like that but if you think about the environment that these schools are in it kind of the same the middle school that I whent to was in the middle of a gang turf where are play facility was also a local ungated park to were people can just come up and hang out at any time . As kids we would find used needles and drugs on school campus  the teachers were never permanent seem like we always had a difrent substitute teacher  because the kids in the school were so out of hand ,I can recal teacher walking out because they have no control over the class . School was never really fun did not have a sports team or any special programs that can promote kids to take school more serious at young age   . I also remember having to share books that othen had torn out pages and griffitii in them .you can just tell that the school really didn't have money the school couldn't even afford computers or at least one computer room for the school , the school had no money I can see that now that I'm older but when you're a child you really just learn to accept the way that things are and work with the conditions  a kid  won't complain about there circumstances until they see that on the other side of the moutain kids have way better opportunities and chances to succeed in life .

The reason theses kids on this side of the mountain have more opportunities and more of a chance to succeed in life is the amount  of money threw property tax and donation that these kids parent are putting in because they have jobs good paying ones to were they can do stuff like that and not be stuck between generosity and  survival .it kinda angers me when u think about how every time you here about a school getting donated a bucnch of computers  to a wealth school that can afford them and some times already have them just up grading  , when they can really donate them to a school that kids don't have the chance to work with a computer .

I really think that the rich is protected so that the poor stay poor  they make sure of that by not letting u venture out your city to another to go to a better school if your zip code does not add up with the school your trying to go to they will deny you  and if you are lucky you may have a relative that has that zip code and you get in like that but if you don't you out of luck meaning your stuck.Keeping you from having the skill that are expected of you to have in the future again something as simple as making it mandatory that every school in California have computers not just the ones in the cities that are wealthy enough to afford it . Because if we don't we end up being the ones left with no jobs no computer literacy skill to apply for one  we will always be to steps behind  if all education opportunities are not equal.

Poorly funded public schools

Do meterials really matter  ?
Do you see people protecting the wealth and providing a lesser education to the poor?
When It comes to kids getting a equal opportunity  I think it does .
When u think about a middle school in west oakland  called Lowell  ,I  there is no football field or running track that's gated we're kids can run .when I was going there I remember it being easy  to sneak off to the store and come back unnoticed  because of the lack of supervision that the school could provide  which left me and any kid in general venerable to be caught  at the wrong place at the wrong time .compare that to a school like glen brook in concord the school was gated we had P.E shirts ,sweats  school pride and  a  track field . This made a kid like me coming from we're I come from more motivated to come to school, something  as  small as a track field can help grow your real tallents and they wonder why most school through out oakland be of the hook  the kids grow up to be some what ignorant beacause of the lack of education that they are getting compared to students at a school like glen brook . I remember the kid making the teacher cry because we were to wild and teacher could not controll the class so in turn your not learning just playing games with the teacher when we already have a bad reputation for substitute teachers  to come and teach at our school I was lucky to get out that school when I could ,when I made it to glen brook I was behind from what the other kids here we're doing  I felt really slow at first and I knew that  I was gonna have a hard time catching up.

Bad Teachers
What is a bad one and what is a good one ?
How could he or she make a difference ?

Let me explain and describe what a bad teacher is.
A  bad teacher is  on that will come and work  with the mentality that these kids ain't shyt and will
never be shyt because of were they come from and that is my reason not to at least try and teach these ghetto ass children  . A bad teacher is the teacher that will send a student out every chance they get

with a referral because they can't gain attention in there class room . Which redirects a student from
learning in the class with the rest of the student and sitting in the office to wait on his parents to be called  wasting precious hours of school time making it easy for a young students of Falll behind in the long run

A good teacher is a teacher that would instead  of sending you to the office with a referral will call your parents himself and have them sit in class because the teacher is more concerned about getting through to you ,and teaching you what you need to be teached then u gaining nothing when you came to school   A good teacher is a teacher that will reach each and every student on the certain level to where it is easy for them to connect with the student and teach them Wawae a teacher can make a
difference is actually taking the time to connect with the students talking with the parents about what they can work with students on at home and trying to get equal education as you would get out of a school where the parents are paying for their kids education .

Two solutions to a oppressive school system

When I think about a oppressive school system I think about how many loops a school can make u jump threw to  final meet your  goal to obtain a profession in a way schools kinda  hold back creative people from doing what they want for example like I said in class I like to spend my free time making beats  and even though my career field is criminal justice I am still required to take some type of art class so I took music thinking It would be a fun class for me to get into and afther taking the class It detoured me from what I liked to do ,I'm thinking this would be a fun hands on class and it ended up being a book work try to remember all theses dead music composer type of class ,I guess it's good to know if you plan on being in a orchestra  but at the end of the day how is this class benefiting me or just the average student if your not a music major  what am I trying to remember all this information for ? It's really a waist of money for some one who doesn't have it like that but yo need the class to move fwdnd that's how they oppress us.

A solution would be to do college general education at a high school level  , let's say before a student graduates from the twelfth grade make it mandatory for them to complete these classes befor they enter college so that once here a student can focus all there time on classes that get him or her ready for their career field

Growing up I've  seen both side the oppressive and non oppressive school system I grew up in west oakland  were as a child if you don't know what being in a good school feels like then you will adapt to the harsh surroundings you can be poor and not no that yo are poor until u leave the city  they use to give us food baskets every Friday to take home and mentally it made you feel like you were a bum that could not afford food .teachers never had control of the class their solution was always to suspend you or have you sit in the office , basically away to exclude you from learning with the rest of that class but that's not my point , I ended up moving with my dad to concord and the difference between the two schools was night and day this school had computers a gym just made you feel important to be there peolpe were a lot friendlier  and made you like school compared to my old school in oakland everybody was always fighting teacher had no control no computers no gym nothing . I was lucky to get out of oakland  I think if I would have stayed I'd be less likely to come to college based on not being aware of what other schools had to offer ,kids at other school were learning how to type in the third grade as to kids in oakland can't learn because their not given the opportunity what they don't know won't heart them
